Talk to Your Kids About Weed Without Losing Them

It is the conversation a lot of parents know they need to have and keep putting off: marijuana. A better starting point is not a lecture. It is a calm, honest conversation that makes room for questions, uncertainty and facts.

Start earlier than you think

Cannabis is legal for adults 21+ in DC, and young people still encounter messages about it online, in music, in group chats and at school. Starting early gives a parent a chance to set expectations before a rumor, a video or a friend fills the gap.

Listen before you explain

Ask what your child has heard. Ask what they think cannabis is and what they see among friends or online. Listening first can show where the real questions are, and it makes a conversation feel less like a test.

Share facts without fear tactics

Keep the discussion grounded in age, rules and safety:

  • Cannabis products are for adults 21+ only.
  • Young people are still developing, and substance use can bring real risks.
  • A legal product for adults is not automatically appropriate for a minor.
  • If a child sees an edible or vape, they should not try it or share it.

Avoid exaggerations that can undercut trust. If you do not know an answer, say so and look for a reliable source together.

Keep the door open

One conversation is rarely the whole conversation. Let your child know they can call you for a ride, ask a question, or tell you when something feels unsafe. Clear expectations and a reliable way home matter.
