Popular Strain Names in DC: What They Do and Don't Tell You

Short answer: You'll see names like OG Kush, Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, Gelato, Wedding Cake, Runtz and Zkittlez on cannabis menus across the U.S. But a strain name is a marketing label, not a measurement. Genetic testing has found that same-named strains aren't always genetically alike (Sawler et al. 2015). A six-state chemical analysis found commercial labels "do not consistently align" with measured cannabinoid and terpene content (Smith et al. 2022). For any product, the batch COA tells you more than the name does. We don't rank strains or describe effects.

What a strain name is

A "strain" (or cultivar) is a named variety a grower sells under a brand name. Nobody keeps an official registry linking a name to set genetics or chemistry. The same name from two growers can be two different plants (Sawler et al. 2015).

The names below appear widely on U.S. menus. Which of them DC's licensed stores carry right now, and how popular they are in DC, is UNKNOWN. ABCA doesn't publish sales by strain. Commonly reported lineages are included only where noted, and they're unverified: no genetic test is cited.

What actually varies between products

  1. THC and total THC. NIDA links higher THC to a greater chance of anxiety and panic, especially for new users (NIDA).
  2. CBD. Not intoxicating (NIDA). See CBD vs. THC.
  3. Terpenes. These are aroma compounds. Claims that they shape effects in people aren't established (see terpenes explained). DC law doesn't require terpene testing (D.C. Code § 7-1671.05).

How to use a strain name

Treat it like a product name. It helps you find the same product again from the same grower, but it doesn't tell you what's inside. Check the batch COA, and ask the licensed store if one isn't posted.
